Chameleon Welding Helmet Repair

Today I have an unplanned article. It just so happened that my welding mask "Chameleon" ceased to fulfill the functions assigned to it: the light filter does not darken when a welding arc appears.

At first, I thought that I would either have to buy a new mask, or a new filter (assembly). The reason for such pessimism is my confidence inspired by the seller at the time of purchase that the filter is powered by built-in solar panels and does not require replacement of batteries. That is ... if it doesn’t work, then it’s a kirdyk board.

At the end of the article, as usual, you can watch a YouTube video about all this, which I shot just yesterday.

Nevertheless, over the 3 years of using the mask, I have repeatedly heard the opinion that there is still a battery there ... and sooner or later it will be discharged and it will have to be changed ...

When I started repairing the mask, I was not at all sure of the positive outcome of the event ... Although ... there were still not many options: either in the trash, or a chance to repair it.

So…

Here it is a symptom of the "disease" of my welding shield. When a bright light appears in front of the front panel, the filter should darken. As you can see it doesn't happen...

I'm going to repair!

I unscrew the 4 screws that secure the frame holding the filter. Literally after the last screw, all the contents fall out forward.

And here is the patient

The manufacturer of this device did not expect that someone would ever "climb" inside. The Corps does not provide for "invasion". There are no screws, no latches, or any other signs that the case is collapsible ... Apparently, the manufacturer hoped that when the battery runs out, I will run to the store for a new shield ...

Yeah... Right now... Run away...

Therefore ... I had to work a little with a knife: make an incision at the junction of the two halves of the body. In order not to damage the insides, I tried not to cut deeply (I don’t know the internal layout).

But actually the "brains" of this light filter. As we can see, there really is a battery here.

Having suspended the repair, I went to the store for a new battery. However, there, the seller brought confusion into my thoughts: he suggested that it was a battery and replacing it with a battery would not help the case.

Having soldered the battery together with the contact antennae, I made sure that this is still an ordinary battery, only ... 3-volt.

However ... I did not buy the same one. The reason for this is this:

- Firstly. How can I change this battery? They grabbed the "native" by spot welding to the antennae. What should I do? Solder? So after all, I will spoil the element, it cannot be heated !!

- Secondly. Should I repeat this procedure again after 2-3 years?

And I decided to make an external power supply that runs on the most affordable and cheapest batteries. The batteries were placed in a container cut from an old children's toy. However… these containers are sold in the same departments as batteries…

The advantages are obvious:

— In the future, the battery replacement process will take a few seconds.

- "Finger" batteries are the most common. If next time the light filter stops working at the most inopportune moment, I will find a replacement much faster (and at least temporarily remove it from the TV remote control).

Tests!!!

I point the light filter at a bright light bulb, covering the photocell (solar battery) with my finger - the glass is transparent.

I remove my finger - the filter is darkened.

Hooray!!! Victory!!! No wonder it got cold!

Now I solder longer wires and secure the wire with a heat gun. In the filter housing, I make a small “window” to bring the wire out.

Since the filter housing was disassembled with a knife, it will have to be assembled with glue.

I missed the joint along the perimeter and for some time squeezed the structure with ordinary clothespins.

The place for the external power supply of the light filter of the Chameleon welding mask, I chose at the top of the mask. He won't bother me here.

Fastened with M3 bolts. I didn’t even have to use nuts: the bolt fit snugly into the mounting holes of the container. Just in case, the edge of the bolts was filled with hot glue.

Agree: looks like a factory product.

And here is the promised video clip about everything that has been said:
