If you need to cut glass, and there was no factory glass cutter at hand, or the quality of a modern tool made in one large eastern country does not suit you, you can adopt one of the glass cutting technologies without a glass cutter.
I will immediately announce all the methods under consideration:
- burning thread;
- an ordinary soldering iron;
- with a drill or file;
- scissors;
- a diamond blade for a grinder.
Now let's take a closer look at each of these methods. But first I want to remind you about safety measures: in order to avoid injury to your hands and eyes, use gloves and goggles.
This technology is mainly used during the cutting of ... glass bottles. Indeed, an original glass can be made from an ordinary bottle if the upper part is cut off from it.
The essence of the method is as follows:
A thick woolen thread is impregnated with some combustible liquid (kerosene, solvent, diesel fuel, alcohol ...). The bottle is tied with a thread in the place of the intended cut. The thread is ignited. After the fire goes out, the bottle is placed in a container of water. If everything was done correctly, after 1-2 seconds you will hear a characteristic click - this glass has burst. Well, how smooth the line is - it already depends on your skill.
An example of such technology can be seen in this video:
Funny technology. Nevertheless, he has the right to life. To work, you will need a soldering iron and some kind of tool made of hard material with which you can scratch the glass (file, diamond disc for a grinder ....)
The action plan is:
Outline the cutting line. To do this, apply a ruler (or something resembling it) and draw a line along it, for example, with a file. At this stage, you need to get a distinct scratch (groove) on the glass, along which a chip will occur.
Now take a well-heated soldering iron and apply its tip to the beginning of the intended groove. The sting should be located at a distance of no more than 1 mm from the groove. When the glass next to the soldering iron heats up, a microcrack should appear along the groove. Move the soldering iron further along the intended line to the next warm-up point. Gradually you will reach the end of the groove. This completes the cutting.
The technology of work is no different from working with a conventional glass cutter. The only caveat is that the winner must have sharp edges. That is, you need to use either a new drill or a sharpened one.
And if you use a file, you need to scratch the edge. Therefore, use either a flat file or a trihedral one.
Unusual but working method. However, its scope is rather narrow. In this way, you can only process the edges of the glass. For example, if you need to cut a glass of a round shape, you will hardly be able to find another way that is so simple.
And its essence is this:
Draw a given contour on the glass with a marker, immerse the glass in a container with water and ... with scissors little by little cut off / cut the excess millimeter by millimeter. It is being in water that will not allow the glass to crack.
To implement this method, you will need a grinder and a diamond disc. The cutting technology is the same as when cutting ceramic tiles. However, there is a peculiarity here:
Using a rotating diamond disc, you need to make a small groove in 2-3 passes. Do not press the grinder on the glass, do not try to delve into the glass array. The disc should slightly scratch the glass! Your goal is to create a groove. After that, the glass breaks, as in ordinary cutting with a glass cutter.
Any of the provided technologies requires certain experience and skill. Therefore, before working on critical products, practice on unnecessary glass.
